September 30th is National Day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The day honours children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It is a day to commemorate the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, which is vital to the reconciliation process.
Orange Shirt Day is also on September 30th, which is an Indigenous-led grassroots movement to raise awareness of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. It was inspired by the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad, who on her first day at residential school was stripped of her new orange shirt her grandmother bought her.
