Its uniqueness stems from the globally significant quantity of heavy rare earths, especially dysprosium and terbium, as well as light rare earths. No other project has this potential.
Torngat Metals expects to complete the pre-feasibility and feasibility studies by the end of 2025, with production targeted to begin in 2028. Once in operation, the mine site will employ approximately 130 employees, with recruitment geared towards Indigenous communities in both Quebec and Labrador.

Torngat Metals recognizes that the Strange Lake project is situated in an area rich in biodiversity and cultural significance to Indigenous peoples. We are committed to working closely with local partners and communities to ensure that impacts from our operations are prevented or mitigated.
To update extensive baseline work done in 2011-2014, surveys were conducted in 2023 and 2024 focusing on biodiversity including birds, water quality and fish habitats. More comprehensive assessments and inventories of migratory birds, waterfowl, caribou, Arctic char, brook trout and lake trout are underway in 2024. Indigenous land/resource use surveys and consultations are also being conducted with local partners.
Torngat Metals recognizes the significance of the George River caribou herd to many communities. We are working closely with local partners to better understand the herd’s behaviour and movements and to develop protection measures, which will be embedded in our operations. Since 2013, we have implemented detailed caribou avoidance procedures for our exploration camp operations. For instance, activities in areas where caribou are observed are immediately halted to minimize any herd disturbances.
