Health and Safety Manager

DESCRIPTION

The Health and Safety Manager plays a key role in promoting and maintaining a safe, healthy and regulatory compliant work environment for remote mining operations. 

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Manager, you will be responsible for the design, implementation and monitoring of health, safety and environmental programs. This position also includes proactive risk management, team awareness, and the promotion of a strong and sustainable safety culture.

IN PARTICULAR, THIS POSITION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development and implementation of HSE policies
  • Develop, update and supervise health, safety and environment programs in compliance with provincial (e.g. CNESST) and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with field teams to assess risks related to mining operations and implement appropriate corrective measures.
  • Ensure the integration of best health and safety practices adapted to northern and mining environments.

Training and awareness

  • Organize training on safety protocols specific to the mining sector (e.g. handling explosives, heavy equipment, confined spaces).
  • Raise employee awareness of the risks associated with extreme conditions, hazardous product handling and emergency management.
  • Maintain open communication with teams to gather feedback and proactively adapt programs.

Incident management and audits

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into incidents and accidents, analyze root causes and recommend corrective measures.
  • Conduct regular audits of equipment, processes and infrastructure to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • In collaboration with CNESST, oversee the management of occupational claims files.

Leadership and coordination

  • Facilitate and coordinate Health and Safety Committee meetings; acknowledge implementation of selected actions.
  • Work in partnership with the Senior Manager, Environment and stakeholders to ensure synergy in the management of HSE initiatives.
  • Provide strategic advice for the achievement of HSE KPIs and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Monitoring and reporting

  • Maintain accurate statistics on incidents, accidents and HSE performance indicators.
  • Regularly communicate program status and progress to teams and management.
  • Ensure compliance with new regulations, and this through active monitoring of all legal developments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in HSE program management, ideally in the mining or manufacturing industry.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable Quebec CNESST, LSST, RSST and federal regulations,
  • Experience in training and risk management in complex and remote environments.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills,
  • Bilingualism French/English, spoken and written,
  • Good command of IT tools – MS Office, HSE management software.
